A quick-reference checklist for building an effective warm-up before any type of exercise.
Before You Start
- ☐ Choose warm-up movements that resemble your main activity where possible
- ☐ Plan for roughly 5-10 minutes for most moderate sessions
- ☐ Have any needed space or equipment ready so the warm-up flows smoothly into your main activity
During Your Warm-Up
- ☐ Start gently and progressively increase movement range and effort
- ☐ Favour dynamic (moving) warm-up exercises over static holds before power- or strength-focused activity
- ☐ Include the specific joints and muscle groups your main activity will use most
Signs You're Ready
- ☐ A light, comfortable increase in heart rate and breathing
- ☐ Reduced stiffness compared with how you felt at the very start
- ☐ No pain or sharp discomfort in any warmed-up joint
A proper warm-up is a genuine investment in both performance and injury-risk reduction, even when time feels tight — even a brief version is better than skipping it.
