This module is for anyone who picks up a packaged food and isn't sure what actually matters on the label — whether you're shopping for yourself, for your family, or trying to compare two similar products in the same aisle.
A food label can look overwhelming — percentages, nutrient tables, an ingredient list full of unfamiliar names. You don't need to decode all of it. A handful of parts of the label can tell you most of what you actually need to know, and that's what this module focuses on first.

The Label — Where to Look
A typical packaged food label includes the product name, an ingredient list, nutrition information, serving size or quantity information, allergen information where present, date and expiry information, storage instructions where relevant, manufacturer or brand information, package quantity, and sometimes marketing claims or declarations. Not every package uses exactly the same layout or includes every one of these — treat this as a general map of where to look, not a fixed template every product follows.
The Ingredient List
Ingredients are generally listed in descending order by quantity, so the first two or three ingredients usually tell you the most about what a food actually is. Sugar can appear under several different names, and oils or fats often show up partway down the list — both are worth a glance without needing to memorise every technical term. An unfamiliar or scientific-sounding ingredient name is not automatically dangerous, and no single ingredient on its own determines whether a food is healthy — "if you can't pronounce it, don't eat it" is a catchy rule, but it isn't a genuinely reliable one.
Sugar
Total carbohydrate, sugars, and added sugar (where separately declared) are three different things worth telling apart — total carbohydrate includes all sugars plus starches and fibre, while added sugar specifically means sugar put in during processing rather than occurring naturally in an ingredient like fruit or milk. Front-of-pack claims like "no added sugar," "natural," "healthy," "energy," or "multigrain" are worth looking past rather than taking at face value — the nutrition panel and ingredient list tell you more. Not all sugar is inherently harmful, and this module does not set an individualized sugar limit for anyone.
Protein on the Label
The nutrition panel's protein figure tells you how much protein is in that food, but it doesn't by itself tell you whether the food is a genuinely useful protein source in your overall diet — a food can be technically "high protein" while still being a poor everyday choice for other reasons, and a food doesn't become healthy simply because it's high in protein. Dietary fibre supports digestion and general gut health, and where it's declared on a nutrition panel, a higher fibre content is generally a useful sign for a packaged grain or cereal product. That said, whole foods — vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains eaten as-is — remain an important source of fibre in their own right, not just packaged products marketed for it.
Fat, Saturated Fat, and Trans Fat
Total fat, saturated fat, and trans fat (where declared) are worth telling apart rather than treating "fat" as one single number to avoid — "all fat is bad" is an oversimplification, and the overall pattern of what you eat across a day and week matters more than any single food's fat content in isolation. Sodium and salt are related but not identical terms — salt (sodium chloride) is roughly 40% sodium by weight, so a product's sodium figure and its "salt" figure, if both appear, won't be the same number. Packaged foods can contribute a substantial share of daily sodium intake even when they don't taste especially salty, since flavour isn't always a reliable guide. The nutrition numbers on a label are usually given per serving, but many people eat the entire packet in one sitting — a small snack pack might claim to be "2 servings," which quietly doubles every number if you eat the whole thing. The practical question worth asking is: "how many servings am I actually eating?" Comparing two products fairly also depends on comparing the same basis — per 100g, per serving, or per package — since a smaller package can look better on a per-package basis while actually being worse per 100g, and a serving size printed on a label is not automatically the amount a person "should" eat. This is about awareness, not obsessive calorie arithmetic.
"Healthy" Claims — Read With a Little Skepticism, Not Fear
Front-of-pack claims like "low fat," "high protein," "natural," "baked," "light," "no added sugar," "fortified," "immunity," diabetic-friendly-style positioning, or "organic" tell you what the manufacturer wants you to notice — the nutrition panel and ingredient list give you the fuller picture underneath. This isn't about assuming manufacturers are being deceptive, and this module doesn't make legal determinations about whether any specific claim is compliant — it's simply about knowing that a front-of-pack claim is marketing, not the whole story.
"Multigrain" and "Whole Grain"
"Multigrain" means a product contains more than one type of grain — it does not automatically mean those grains are whole grains, and a multigrain product can still be made mostly from refined flour. Checking the ingredient order and the actual type of grain or flour listed tells you more than the word "multigrain" on its own. This module doesn't label any product "unhealthy" based on a single marketing term.
"No Added Sugar" and Sweeteners
"No added sugar" means no sugar was added during processing — it does not mean the product is sugar-free, since naturally occurring sugars (from fruit or milk, for example) can still be present and show up in the sugars figure. Some products use approved sweeteners instead of sugar; this module doesn't create fear around approved sweeteners or give individualized advice about how much of them to consume.
Fortified Foods
"Fortified" broadly means a nutrient (like iron, vitamin D, or a B vitamin) has been added to a food that wouldn't otherwise contain it in that amount. Fortification can be genuinely useful, but fortified doesn't automatically mean a food is nutritionally superior in every other respect — a fortified snack can still be high in sugar or low in fibre. People with a known food allergy need to pay attention to the ingredient list, any allergen declaration, and any "may contain traces of" or cross-contact statement on the package. This module does not diagnose food allergies, and it cannot tell you that a specific product is safe for someone with a known allergy — that judgement needs to be based on the actual product's label at the time of purchase, and for a known severe allergy, guidance from a doctor or allergy specialist is the right next step, not a general website explanation.
Children and Food Labels
Children's food products often use appealing cartoon characters and prominent front-of-pack claims — it's worth looking past both of those to the actual ingredient list and nutrition information, the same way you would for any other product.
